An American Airlines plane had a bit of a slide at New York's Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. The Embraer E145, with 53 passengers on board, slipped off the runway and into the grass shortly after landing in snowy weather. The incident happened around 4 p.m. as the plane was being taxied to the terminal.
According to both the FAA and American Airlines officials, the snowy conditions on the airfield, caused by light snowstorms in the area, led to the scary slide. Videos shared on social media captured the emergency service crews responding to the scene, helping passengers off the snow-covered field. Thankfully, all 50 passengers and three crew members were unharmed.
The American Airlines spokesperson mentioned that safety is their top priority and apologized to customers for the experience. The passengers were safely evacuated from the plane and transported to the terminal by bus.
The aircraft had just completed its 300-mile journey from Philadelphia International Airport. However, it landed nearly an hour behind schedule, according to Flightaware data. The incident occurred while the plane was heading toward the terminal, slipping off the tarmac due to the snowy conditions.
Despite the minor hiccup, there were no reported injuries among the passengers and crew. It's worth noting that the slip happened during light snowfall in Rochester, and the area was anticipating heavier snowfall over the weekend, with Buffalo expecting a substantial 2 to 4 inches per hour. Stay safe out there!
